Spotlight: What’s Next?

We’ve got a very busy 12 months ahead to stay on track for our Science Based Reduction Targets. It seems clear that the post-Covid world is not as radically different in terms of remote working as we might have predicted. Perhaps great for company culture and mental health, but certainly more of a challenge for our planet.

We will also be continuing to develop and launch more low-carbon digital marketing solutions for our clients. And embedding sustainable initiatives across the different agency cultures.

Here are just a few of the highlights from our plans over the next year…

MAY 23

Promoting carbon removals in Covent Garden

With the launch of the Covent Carbon Capture project, we aim to showcase to the world how important carbon removals could be. And why offsetting and carbon neutrality just doesn’t have the environmental impact that people think it does.

JUN 23

Rebooting the drive for new staff energy schemes

The restrictions put on new customers by energy companies last year made it hard for us to roll out new schemes to help staff switch to renewable energy or invest in wind energy through platforms like Ripple. As the energy crisis starts to settle, we aim to reboot these initiatives ASAP.

JUL 23

Leading the conversation in low-carbon marketing

With our Chief Sustainability Officer’s role as the co-chair of the BIMA Sustainability Council, we’re supporting the BIMA-driven “Marketing declares a climate emergency” campaign, working with other agencies on their Net Zero journeys, and championing our low-carbon marketing and technology solutions.

AUG 23

Taking action on UK beaches

As part of the Volunteering Scheme offered by MSQ, an MSQ/Sustain team will undertake beach cleans in the South-West, which have been hit by pollution ranging from ghost nets, plastics and sewage. And we won’t stop there – alongside the small act of picking up waste, we’ll continue to work with organisations like Friends of Ocean Action and The Nature Conservancy to put pressure on politicians, fisheries and water companies to protect our precious marine and coastal environment.

SEP 23

Giki stocktake

In April 2022 we launched Giki, a way of gamifying the personal carbon footprint reductions of our staff. With behavioural change being a key driver of our carbon footprint strategy, this ‘stocktake’ will really help to assess the impact of our personal carbon footprints and further promote the tool internally.

OCT 23

There’s nothing scarier than the climate crisis

We use the Halloween social moment to drive awareness of the scary realities of going beyond 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. We can’t delay from climate action and zombie our way to species extinction, so watch this space for a series of campaigns that ring the alarm on the lead up to COP28.

NOV/DEC 23

MSQ at COP28

MSQ has been at every COP since Paris, and this year our role will be supporting a range of NGO clients with campaigns and events. We will be putting Nature+Positive on the agenda, launching Science-based Targets for Nature, campaigning for the sustainable management of our Ocean with Friends of Ocean Action and working closely with the World Economic Forum on key plans.

JAN 24

2023 carbon footprint audit starts

We report our carbon footprint on the calendar year. So, as we do each year, we’ll kick off 2024 by collecting as much data as possible, launching detailed staff surveys to ensure our measurements are fair and accurate.

FEB 24

Targeting 300,000 trees planted milestone

We signed-up to The Million Tree pledge in September 2021 and continue to plant trees for clients, ourselves and as gifts to mark special occasions. To keep our plans on track, we’ll have planted a whopping 300,000 trees by February 2024, through our tree planting partner, Ecologi.

MAR 24

Rolling out international staff schemes

We’ve got some great travel and energy schemes for our UK staff – with more to come! And last year we spent time researching equivalents in the other countries in which we operate. Our goal by next March is to roll out as many of these across our offices in the US, China and Singapore.

APR 24

Launching the MSQ 2024 Annual Report

This time next year we’ll do it all again, bringing you our 2023 data and plans for the twelve months ahead. All companies are now at the sharp end of meeting their Science Based Targets for 2030, so these reports become more and more critical each year.
